Did You Get This From a Friend?

Dear Crissy,

I hijacked Vita’s letter this month because it’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month and I wanted to share my recently increased “awareness”. I have been involved with the Women’s Center for five years, the last two as an employee. For five years, I have told others and always believed that domestic violence can affect anyone – regardless of race, creed, financial status or language. I held babies in our shelter, rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night to advocate for sexual assault victims, spoke at meetings and my heart and soul grieved for and admired the survivors we assisted. But domestic violence never touched me. Then three weeks ago, a friend asked me to help another friend. Her husband had been verbally and emotionally abusing her for years. A week after that, another friend asked me to help yet another one of our friends whose husband suddenly turned violent one night having never been this way before. Two friends needed the Women’s Center’s help within one week. It finally turned personal.

The first thing that hit me was that these women had suffered in silence. How many more of my friends do the same? The second was the admiration I have for my colleagues. Our case managers, counselors and other programs staff helped both these women immediately. They offered them compassion, options and a listening ear. I feel so privileged to be a part of this great organization and I thank all of you, our supporters and volunteers, for making it possible for the Women’s Center to do the work we do. I could share a bunch of stats on domestic violence with you, but the message is simple – People suffer abuse in silence and it really does touch us all, whether we know it or not. Help us let everyone know there is help by talking about domestic abuse and where to get help. Let people know that you’re involved with the Women’s Center. You never know who might be listening and need a helping hand.

Thank You

ExxonMobil

Article ImageThank you to all the ExxonMobil volunteers that made the United Way Day of Caring a huge success! Special thanks to the site leads, Andrew Dorow and Meredith Jeffrey, for their leadership and their team of 64 volunteers that accrued 834 volunteer hours.

These volunteers built a new fence at our shelter and then re-purposed the old wood into bird houses for our children to paint, updated the kitchen at our Hamrah aftercare center, planted trees and even fixed a software glitch on our assistant shelter director's computer. They also brought lunch for our clients and donated diapers, toys and clothing. Thank you ExxonMobil!

Jewels for our JewelsArticle Image

Dave Anderson and Jan Smith hosted a unique party on September 29. They asked their guests to bring a piece of jewelry to donate to the women at our shelter. What a wonderful way to remind these women that they are priceless and all are "jewels" in their own way! Dave and Jan collected more than 1400 pieces of jewelry for our women that night. What a wonderful treat!
